Vimal Thomas, MSW, RSW

My name is Vimal, and as a Registered Social Worker and psychotherapist in Thunder Bay, Ontario, I offer a calm, non‑judgmental space where all parts of you are welcome: your thoughts, emotions, body sensations, culture, history, and the parts that have long stayed hidden or silent. My approach is non‑pathologizing and trauma‑informed; instead of asking “What is wrong with you?”, I am more interested in “What happened to you?” and “What strengths have helped you make it this far?”. Together, we learn the language of your inner world so you can relate to yourself with more compassion, clarity, and choice.

Walking beside you as you remember yourself…
Who I work with
I have had the privilege of working with people from many different backgrounds, including Indigenous communities from First Nations, Métis, and Inuit contexts, and I hold deep respect for the impact of colonialism, intergenerational trauma, and community strength.
I support youth, adults, and older adults living with PTSD and trauma, anxiety, depression, grief, identity questions, and major life transitions, as well as those who simply feel that “something needs to change” without yet having the words for it. In our work together, my role is to assist you in moving beyond just coping toward living in a way that feels more aligned, meaningful, and true to your own reality.
How we might work together
To do this, I draw on a range of evidence‑based approaches, including Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT), Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), Prolonged Exposure Therapy (PE), Prolonged Grief Disorder Therapy (PGDT), Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), Interpersonal and Social Rhythm Therapy (IPSRT), Emotionally Focused Individual Therapy (EFIT), Mindfulness‑Based approaches, and Internal Family Systems (IFS)–informed work.
I also integrate somatic and body‑based practices, together with influences from Yoga and my lifelong Tae Kwon Do practice, to help gently reconnect mind and body in a way that feels grounded and respectful. Rather than fitting you into a method, sessions are tailored collaboratively so that the work reflects your needs, culture, and values.
The person you’ll meet in the room

Outside of sessions, staying current with neuroscience, psychology, philosophy, and questions of meaning is an important part of my life, and I’m especially drawn to perspectives, like Viktor Frankl’s that honour the search for purpose even in suffering.

I also make room for creativity and play through basketball, gardening, painting, reading, and writing poetry, and I am currently working on my first psychology non‑fiction book, God Update. All of this informs how I sit with you: as a grounded, curious, and compassionate companion who takes your story seriously and trusts in your capacity to grow.
