Dialectical Behaviour Therapy
Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) is an evidence-based therapy designed for people who feel emotions very intensely and struggle to cope in safe, effective ways. DBT is often used to support borderline personality disorder (BPD), chronic emotion dysregulation, self-harm and suicidal behaviours, as well as anxiety, depression, trauma-related difficulties, eating and substance use issues, and relationship conflict. Rather than asking you to “just calm down,” DBT teaches practical skills so you can manage big feelings, reduce impulsive behaviours, and build a life that feels more stable and worth living.
Why choose DBT?
DBT has strong research support for reducing self-harm, suicidal behaviour, hospitalizations, and crisis use in people living with BPD and other conditions involving intense emotions. It is especially helpful if you feel stuck in patterns like emotional outbursts, shutting down, people-pleasing, substance use, or other behaviours that help in the moment but cause problems later. DBT focuses on four core skill areas—mindfulness, emotion regulation, distress tolerance, and interpersonal effectiveness—so you can stay grounded, ride out waves of emotion, and communicate more clearly in relationships.
