Prolonged Exposure Therapy
Prolonged Exposure (PE) therapy is a structured, evidence-based trauma treatment that helps people gently face and process memories, emotions, and situations they have been avoiding since a traumatic event. PE is most often used for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) related to experiences such as assault, abuse, accidents, combat, medical trauma, or other life-threatening events, and it can also reduce related depression, anxiety, guilt, and anger. Over time, repeatedly approaching what feels frightening—but is now safe—helps your brain learn that these memories and reminders are not dangerous, so they trigger less fear and distress in daily life.
Why choose PE?
PE is one of the most researched and strongly recommended treatments for PTSD, with many studies showing significant reductions in trauma symptoms and loss of PTSD diagnosis for a large proportion of clients. It is especially helpful if you find yourself avoiding places, people, or activities, feeling on edge or easily triggered, or reliving the trauma in memories, nightmares, or intense body reactions. By combining education about trauma, breathing skills, imaginal exposure (revisiting the memory in a safe way), and in‑vivo exposure (gradually facing avoided situations), PE helps you regain a sense of safety, confidence, and control.
