Understanding depression

It isn’t always sadness. Sometimes it’s the absence of feeling.

Depression can change the way you experience ordinary life. Food may taste less appealing. Hobbies lose their pull. Conversations require effort, and decisions that once seemed simple become difficult.

You might sleep more than usual and still feel exhausted, or lie awake at night unable to settle. Concentration may be harder. Your patience might feel thinner. You may find yourself withdrawing from people you care about.

For some people, depression arrives after a loss, prolonged stress, or a difficult transition. For others, there is no single event that explains it. We won’t insist that you identify one.

Self-criticism can make things heavier. A missed appointment or an unfinished task may start to feel like proof that you’re letting everyone down.

We begin by understanding what daily life has become for you, without reducing your experience to a list of symptoms.

How we can help

What can therapy offer when everything feels like an effort?

Depression therapy isn’t about asking you to think positively or giving you another list of things you should be doing.

We look at what has changed, what may be keeping you stuck, and which small, realistic changes could make everyday life more manageable.

If getting out of the house feels difficult, for example, we wouldn’t begin by expecting you to overhaul your routine. We might start by understanding what makes mornings hard and identifying one step worth trying.

01 / RECONNECT

Finding a way back into daily life

Behavioural activation explores how mood and activity affect each other. When depression leads you to withdraw, life may offer fewer chances for connection, satisfaction, or a sense of accomplishment.

Together, we can identify manageable activities that matter to you, without turning recovery into another performance target.

02 / UNDERSTAND

Making sense of self-critical thoughts

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) helps us notice how thoughts and behaviour can reinforce low mood.

We may explore beliefs such as “I’m a burden” or “Nothing I do matters,” and consider whether they tell the full story of your experience.

03 / FIND DIRECTION

Reconnecting with what matters

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) may help you explore your values and respond differently to difficult thoughts and feelings.

You don’t have to feel enthusiastic about everything. We can work toward meaningful choices at a pace that takes your energy and circumstances seriously.

Your therapy may also involve exploring relationships, difficult life experiences, sleep, stress, or patterns of isolation. We choose the approach collaboratively and review whether it is helping. When appropriate, we can discuss coordinating care with your physician or another healthcare provider.
Getting started

You don’t have to arrive feeling motivated.

In your first session, we’ll talk about what your days have been like: your mood, energy, sleep, relationships, responsibilities, and anything else you feel is important. We’ll also ask about your safety and the support available to you.

You won’t be expected to tell your entire life story at once. Your therapist will explain confidentiality and its limits, answer your questions, and work with you to identify what you would like help with.

As therapy continues, we may agree on small steps between appointments. These are opportunities to learn what works for you, not tests you can pass or fail.

First, understand

Make sense of what’s changed.

Explore how depression is affecting your life and identify the concerns you want to address.

Then, experiment

Try manageable changes.

Work with your therapist on practical strategies, reflecting on what feels possible and useful.

Together, review

Notice what is shifting.

Review your mood, functioning, and goals together, adjusting your treatment when needed.

A gentler starting point

What if today didn’t have to look like yesterday?

A difficult morning does not have to become a judgment about the whole day.

Depression can make one unfinished task feel like evidence that nothing is changing. In therapy, we can look at these conclusions with curiosity rather than treating them as facts.

Progress may involve finding a little more structure, reconnecting with someone, asking for help, or responding to yourself with less criticism. We work with what matters in your life.

Frequently asked questions

Questions before you begin?

You may have questions about what you’re experiencing, what therapy involves, and whether now is the right time to start.

What if I’m not sure whether I have depression?

You don’t need a diagnosis to talk with a therapist about persistent low mood, numbness, or difficulty functioning. We’ll explore what you’re experiencing and discuss whether a medical assessment or other support may also be appropriate.

Can I be depressed even if I don’t feel sad?

Yes. Some people describe feeling empty, irritable, disconnected, or unable to enjoy things they previously liked. A clinician can help you understand these experiences in the context of your life.

What if I don’t have the energy to do therapy homework?

Tell your therapist. We can adapt between-session activities to your energy and circumstances, or focus initially on understanding what is making daily life difficult. Therapy should be collaborative rather than another source of pressure.

Can I attend therapy while taking antidepressants?

Yes. Psychotherapy and medication can be used together when appropriate. Our therapists do not prescribe medication, but we can discuss coordinating with your physician or prescribing clinician. Do not change prescribed medication without consulting them.

What if I’ve felt this way for a long time?

You can seek therapy whether your difficulties began recently or have been present for years. We’ll explore what has helped, what hasn’t, and what you want to work toward. The duration of therapy will depend on your needs and progress.

Can I have depression therapy online?

Yes. BelMind Therapeia offers virtual psychotherapy throughout Ontario as well as in-person appointments in Thunder Bay. During your consultation, you can discuss which format is suitable for your situation and privacy needs.

What if I’m having thoughts of suicide or feel unsafe?

Please tell your therapist about these thoughts so that safety and appropriate support can be discussed. BelMind provides scheduled therapy and is not an emergency service. If you need immediate support in Canada, call or text 9-8-8 at any time. If your safety is in immediate danger, call 9-1-1 or go to the nearest emergency department.
