When the relationship feels harder than it should.
You may still love each other deeply—and still feel stuck in the same painful patterns. Couples therapy in Thunder Bay creates space to slow down, understand what is happening between you, and find a way forward together.

The distance did not happen all at once.
Somewhere along the way, talking started to feel like walking through a minefield. You rehearse what you’re going to say before you say it. You keep score without meaning to. You’ve had the exact same argument so many times you could perform both parts.
Underneath the logistics, schedules, money, and in-laws is a quieter question neither of you may be saying out loud: are we going to be okay?
You don’t need a relationship that never has conflict. You need one where conflict does not feel like proof that you’re failing each other.
It often shows up in the smallest moments.
These are not failures. They are signs that the cycle between you needs attention.
You’ve had the same fight, word for word, more than five times.
One of you raises a concern and the other shuts down, walks away, or goes quiet for the rest of the night.
You’re better at co-parenting or running the household than you are at being partners.
Sex and physical affection have quietly disappeared, and neither of you has said anything about it.
You rehearse conversations in the shower or the car, and never end up having them.
A friend, a phone, or a past hurt has become something you cannot discuss without a fight.
You say “I don’t know if this is fixable” to yourself, but not to your partner.
You’re both exhausted from trying—or exhausted from not trying anymore.
If two or three of these sound familiar, that is not a verdict on your relationship. It is information—and exactly what couples therapy is built to work with.
Not just relationships in crisis.
Couples come to BelMind Therapeia at many different points. The work can help when things feel fragile, and when you want to protect something that is already good.
Communication breakdown
Talking in circles, shutting down, or every conversation becoming an argument.
Trust repair
Infidelity, secrecy, or broken agreements that have changed how safe the relationship feels.
Emotional disconnection
Living like roommates, or feeling unseen and unimportant to one another.
Recurring conflict
The same fight on a loop, regardless of what the topic is supposed to be.
Major life transitions
A new baby, a move, job loss, health diagnosis, or the demands of blending families.
Intimacy and sex
Mismatched desire, avoidance, or a physical relationship that has gone quiet.
Considering separation
Some couples come to rebuild. Others come to separate with less damage and more clarity. Both are valid reasons to book.
Premarital and relationship strengthening
For couples who are doing fine and want to stay that way.
A pattern can change—even if it has been there for years.
Relationship research suggests many couples wait around six years after problems begin before seeking help. The earlier you interrupt a pattern, the less entrenched it has time to become.
You do not have to be in crisis to benefit, and you do not have to wait six years to start.

Is couples therapy covered by insurance in Ontario?
Many extended health plans cover psychotherapy with a Registered Social Worker (RSW) or Registered Psychotherapist (RP), which can include couples sessions. Coverage varies by provider and plan, so check your specific benefits. We direct bill wherever possible and can provide receipts formatted for insurance and NIHB claims.
Do you offer couples therapy in Thunder Bay in person, or only virtual?
Both. Couples can meet in person at Suite 405, 101 Syndicate Ave N in Thunder Bay, or connect virtually from anywhere in Ontario. Virtual sessions can work well when one partner travels for work or you are blending schedules.
What if only one of us wants to go to therapy?
That is common, and it is still worth booking the free consultation. Sometimes one partner starts individually and the other joins later once they see it is not about being blamed.
How long does couples therapy take to work?
Many couples notice meaningful movement within 8 to 20 sessions of consistent attendance. The right timeline depends on your goals and the pattern you are working through.
Is it too late for us? We have been struggling for years.
Coming in later does not mean it is too late. It can mean there is a longer pattern to untangle, which is exactly what this work is for.
Do you help couples who are leaning toward separating?
Yes. Some couples come to rebuild the relationship. Others come to separate with more clarity and less damage, particularly when children are involved. Both are legitimate reasons to book.
